What is in a name? 

It was William Shakespeare who wrote, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Perhaps today he would have written, “Lake Ontario by any other name would still be wet.” Perhaps not as poetic, but just as true.

Last week, the President of the United States threw a bit of a hissy fit and renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America. At least in the United States.

And it seems kind of silly, and a bit of a tempest in a teapot, but names change.

This past decade has seen the change of sports teams, streets and schools because the previous name was offensive to someone.
People change their names. My name is Dennison, but through my life I have been Denny, Den and Denn, but never Dennison. And Churches change their names. Cornerstone Wesleyan Church used to be Bedford Community Church.

What is in a name?

In the book of Philippians, Paul wrote that Jesus was the name above all other names, and Peter reminded the religious leaders of his day, that in Jesus, “God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”

What is in a name? When it comes to our salvation, everything.
