Recently, I was reminded of a conference I attended several years ago entitled Effective Marriage Counselling.

What did I learn? I learned, or at least I was reminded yet again, that marriages are worth saving. We live in a society where marriage is seen as a temporary state where more and more people are becoming serial polygamists, that is, they have multiple spouses, just not all at the same time. And that isn’t what God had in mind.

The Bible and social science agree: people are happier, healthier and wealthier when they are married and remain married.

And those who chose not to marry would say, “That’s not fair. We deserve the same benefits as married couples.” But they can’t have those benefits! Oh, they might have the same pension benefits, legal benefits and health care benefits, but they can’t achieve the same emotional and spiritual benefits as married folks because they aren’t married folks. And marriage means one man and one woman legally married.

For us as a church, that means doing everything we can to protect and promote marriage. For you, as married couples, it means you should do everything you can to make sure your marriage succeeds, for you, your spouse and your kids.  Have a great week and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
