“Missed it by that much.”

Even those who weren’t alive when the phrase became memorable recognize it as coming from Agent 86, better known as Maxwell Smart. For those of us old enough, it was a regular part of the popular television show Get Smart. The words were uttered whenever the inept agent tried to explain away one of his gaffes.

While they didn’t use those words, I’m sure the city of Charlottetown, PEI, felt that way last week. I read a recent article about a swimming pool in the city that opened last summer. Authorities just discovered that their pool is 12 mm short of meeting Swimming Canada’s requirements for official competitions. Missed it by that much!

The book of Acts records Paul sharing his faith with King Agrippa, and after listening to Paul, we read Acts 26:28 ^NKJV Then Agrippa said to Paul, ’You almost persuade me to become a Christian.” It seems that Agrippa missed it by that much.

The original contractor will correct the length of the pool in Charlottetown. However, we don’t know if Agrippa was ever persuaded.

And that’s the thing about faith. Sometimes “almost” isn’t enough. But like the length of the pool, if we’re willing, we can still make it right.
