I attended the funeral of a friend and colleague this past week, and it made me think.

It was acknowledged that my friend had planned the funeral service. He picked out the music and decided who should take part, and I think that is a good thing.  I am a big believer in letting your loved ones know the specific elements you would like incorporated at the final celebration of your life. Including the songs you would like sung and who you would like to speak.

After all, it is your funeral.

And as I reflected on how I would plan my funeral, keeping in mind that Angela is opposed to my preaching the sermon myself, I realized that while we might specify who will speak, we will really have very little control over what they say.

The question that I asked myself on Monday was: What will people say about me when I’m gone?  How will they remember Denn as a husband, father, friend and pastor?  Then I realized, it doesn’t matter, I’ll be dead!

As long as I do the best I can, with God’s help on this side of eternity, the words I want to hear more than any are “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Have a great week, and remember: to see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
