As we move into the third week of our federal election, I thought it would be wise to share some thoughts from John Wesley that hopefully will shape our response as Wesleyans, and more importantly, as Christians during this election, or any election for that matter.

These thoughts were recorded by Wesley in the fall of 1744, and while they were written almost 300 years ago, they are as relevant today as they were when Wesley penned them.
“I met those of our society who had votes in the ensuing election and advised them:
1. To vote, without fee or reward, for the person they judged most worthy
2. To speak no evil of the person they voted against, and
3. To take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.”

As important as the issues and this election might be, they aren’t important enough to lose friendships over, or more importantly, they aren’t important enough to lose your Christian testimony over.

Think before you speak. Not everything you think has to be spoken aloud.

And remember, Jesus said those who followed him would be known for their love for one another, not their love for a particular politician or political party.

Have a great week and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
