As I was flying to Johannesburg last week, I pulled the map up on the seat back display, and it told me, we were flying at 12,000 metres, at 860 km per hour and it was -59 outside. And I didn’t even blink. That seemed relatively normal. Not!

At that point, I realized I had lost the wonder of flying.

I was travelling at 860 km per hour, 12 km above the earth in a hollow aluminum tube with wings, and it seemed ho-hum.

How often do we lose the wonder in life? Not just the wonder of flying, the wonder of life?

The next day, before my conference began, I had the opportunity to take a safari at the Pilanesberg National Park, and as I viewed elephants, rhinoceros, hippopotamuses, giraffes and even a leopard, I allowed myself to be wowed by God’s amazing creation.

Please remind me to take a hippopotamus off my Christmas list.

In Psalm 139, King David marvelled at how God had created him and knit him together in his mother’s womb. Too often, because we just ‘are’, we don’t pause and reflect on the wonder of how and why we are. And we are more amazing than airplanes.

Have a great week and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
