If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs. . . that is the beginning of Rudyard Kipling’s iconic poem “If.”  It is also a fair description of an eight-second video that has recently gone viral.  The video shows a gentleman calmly eating a sandwich in a square in the French suburb of Nanterre, just outside Paris.
Now eating the sandwich is not Kipling worthy, but it is what is happening around the sandwich eater that makes it worthy of “If.”
If you’ve been watching the news recently, you are aware that France has been in the midst of riots for the past week as people have protested the death of a 17-year-old boy killed by police during a traffic stop.
On one side of the man was a group of rioters throwing objects at the armed police officers on his other side.  Between the two groups, a fire was raging, and the lone man was eating his sandwich.
Sometimes, as a Christian, I feel like I’m in the middle of a cultural war that’s raging around me.  I pray that Jesus will give me the peace I need to stay calm and perhaps enjoy a sandwich.
Have a great week, and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
