I’m tired of being vilified. You see, I’m pro-life, and it’s not because I’m a misogynistic old white man who wants to take away women’s control over their own bodies. It’s because I believe that pre-born children are human beings who deserve protection.
And I know that there are hard cases. When the mother’s life is in danger, or the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest. But those are the minority of cases.
The majority of cases are because the child will be a burden. An emotional burden, a physical burden, or a financial burden. This, of course, is a reality, because every child ever born has been a burden at some time or another. An emotional burden, a physical burden, or a financial burden. And so have your aged parents, or for that matter, your spouse.
But when do we deserve protection? When our heart starts beating, six weeks after conception? Or when brain waves are measured at sixteen weeks? Or when pain receptors are functioning at twenty weeks? Or is it really not until we draw our first breath?
If you’re pro-choice, I’m probably not going to change your mind, but you need to understand that you’re definitely not going to change mine.
Have a great week, and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
