I was
reading an article the other day about the problem of feral pigs in Alberta.
Not
that I’m all that interested in the problem of feral pigs in Alberta…..
However,
I discovered that feral pigs are one of the world’s most invasive species. Who
would have thought? And while fascinating, that wasn’t what captured my
attention about the article.
What
captivated me was the subtitle of the article that read: “Officials are
unleashing ‘Judas pigs,’ which are fitted with GPS collars, eventually leading
hunters to groups of their fellow swine.”
When I
read the term “Judas pigs”, I wondered if the author knew the Jesus story or if
they were simply using an everyday cultural reference?
It is
remarkable how many secular folks, who have no understanding of the Jesus
story, understand what it means to be a “Judas”? Very few people reading the
article would fail to understand that the Judas pig would betray the other
pigs.
Those
same people, who have never read the gospels, probably understand the concept
of the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son and what it means to turn the other
cheek.
Another reminder that the legacy of the Bible and the teachings of Jesus have
impacted our world, from hospitals and universities to the description of feral
pigs in Alberta.
Have a great week and remember: To see what is really possible, you
will have to attempt the impossible.
