Last week we put new shingles
on the roof of our shed. And when I say we, I mean Bruce put new shingles on
the roof of our shed while I cut shingles, and carried shingles and passed
shingles. Things I could do with my feet planted firmly on the ground.
And when we were done I discovered that the roof was much more noticeable when
the shingles needed to be replaced than it was after the shingles had been
replaced. And that is very much like our lives. People tend to notice what’s
wrong with our lives much quicker than they notice what’s right with our lives.
And that is like the life of the church. Society is very quick to comment on
the flaws of the church, but less likely to notice all that’s right with the
church.
However, I didn’t replace the shingles on the shed so people would notice; I
did it because they needed to be replaced.
We don’t obey the teaching of Christ so people will notice; we obey the
teaching of Christ because we are Christ followers.
And the church doesn’t impact the world so people will notice. We seek to
impact the world because that’s what the church is supposed to do.
Have a great week and remember: To see what is really possible, you
will have to attempt the impossible.
