It’s not what you mean, it’s what people think you mean. Sometime ago, I read a story, and I can in no way vouch for its veracity, about a woman who misunderstood what” LOL” stood for. She thought the acronym meant “lots of love” and in many instances that would work. However when responding to a friend who had recently lost her mother the unfortunate lady wrote something along the lines of “Sorry to hear about the death of your dear mother, LOL.”
There are all several of those acronyms out there that should not be used by those who claim to follow Jesus. The problem is that when they’re mentioned being inappropriate, their response often is “sure that’s what other’s mean when they use ________ (you can fill in the blank), but that’ not what I mean when I use it.” But the truth is, it’s not what you mean, it’s what people think you mean. So even if you think OMG stands for Oh My Goodness, people are hearing you misusing God’s name. And when the Bible speaks about taking God’s name in vain, it means using it in a frivolous manner. And ending a sentence with the Name of the One who created the universe is frivolous, whether it’s written or spoken. Have a great week and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
