This past week it seemed that the news was filled with stories concerning capital punishment. First, there was the failed execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee. Then there was the announcement from U.S. Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, that military death row inmate Nidal Hasan’s execution in December by firing squad would be livestreamed. Shades of The Hunger Games.
Following the conversations online, I find it intriguing that many who are anti-abortion are pro-capital punishment, and many who are pro-abortion are anti-capital punishment. To me, that doesn’t sound pro-life.
I am pro-life, which to me means I oppose abortion on demand, capital punishment, and Medical Assistance In Dying. (MAID)
And yes, I understand those are all complex topics, and there are no easy answers.
I helped to draft the Wesleyan Church’s statement on abortion, which reads in part, “The Wesleyan Church seeks to acknowledge, preserve, and advocate for the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. . .”
David wrote in Psalm 139:13 “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
If we believe God created every life, shouldn’t that belief shape how we treat each life He created?
Have a great week, and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
