Last Saturday morning, I was leaving Tim Horton’s, as hard as that is to believe, when an older gentleman spoke to me. He nodded and commented on the beautiful morning. To which I replied, “Yes, and it’s supposed to be like this all weekend.” His response was, “It’s about time. We deserve it.”
And it might seem like we deserve it. After all, it had been 13 weeks since we’ve had a dry weekend. But seriously. We deserve it?
I’m pretty sure that he was speaking figuratively and not literally. After all, what could we have possibly done to deserve it? Offered sacrifices? Performed a sun dance?
And what did that say about everyone who was dealing with the wildfires out west?
How often in life is our attitude “I deserve that”? And sometimes we do.
The danger is when the “I deserve it” attitude spills over into our spiritual life.
I deserve to be forgiven. I deserve to be offered eternal life. I deserve to have my prayers answered.
Here is the short answer: No. We. Don’t. And that, my friends, is the miracle of grace.
Even though we don’t deserve it, God still forgives us. God still offers us eternal life, and God still answers our prayers.
Have a great week and remember: To see what is really possible, attempt the impossible.
