Does the name Alan MacMasters ring a bell? It should. He invented the electric toaster.  It’s true.  He has been named as the inventor of the toaster in more than a dozen books.  Wikipedia credits him with the invention, along with articles published worldwide.  He was kind of a hero in his native Scotland, and until recently, the Scottish government touted him as a prime example of the nation’s “innovative and inventive spirit”.

Except it’s not true, not a word of it. We don’t know who invented the toaster, but we know who didn’t, Alan MacMasters.  And we know who invented the myth, Alan MacMasters’ friend Alex when he posted the first article on Wikipedia in 2012

It was a circular truth, the articles cited the books, which in turn cited the articles, which of course, cited Wikipedia, and everyone believed it.

We live in a time where what people believe and accept are very much like the myth of the toaster, and like the toaster story, there will come a time when people will shake their heads in amazement.

Morals and values shouldn’t change. Two thousand years ago, the question was asked, “What is truth?” And the answer came from Jesus when he stated, “I am the way, the truth and the Life.”

Have a great week, and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
