In a 2023 Penn, I wrote, “We need to understand that MAID is not assisted suicide. Suicide is taking one’s own life, but MAID is asking the state to take it for you. I wonder how long it will be before the state won’t wait to be asked.”

I guess I don’t have to wonder any longer. Recently in Ontario it’s been revealed that a lady in her eighties was euthanized against her wishes. I’m pretty sure the proper term for that is murder.

The woman had initially requested MAID after undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery.

But, and after the but comes the truth, later she told an assessor she had changed her mind. Because of her personal and religious beliefs, she wanted palliative care instead. That seems pretty straightforward.

However, her request for hospice was denied, and her husband asked for a second assessment.

Despite her change of mind, the second assessment led to the woman being killed by a doctor.

A review committee concluded that once the woman had withdrawn her MAID request, her medical team should have focused on providing her with palliative care.

There is a reason that, despite their differences, every major religion commands us not to kill.

Have a great week and remember: to see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
