I’ve been doing it for the past 14 years, so it must be a Christmas tradition.
In 2011, I decided I should give something back at Christmas. Something that wouldn’t benefit me or Cornerstone. So, I bought a Santa hat and signed up to tend a kettle for the Salvation Army.
I know that technically I didn’t need to buy a Santa hat, but what says Christmas more than a fat man with a beard in a Santa hat.
It has been interesting to people-watch as I stand next to the kettle. There are those who look away; maybe it’s the Santa hat. And little kids who light up when they see me, and again it might be the Santa hat. There are those who scowl and those who smile.
But most of all, I marvel at those who give. They drop in their change and their bills, and over the past few years they’ve been able to tap a card and give electronically. They are young and old and come from all walks of life. They give to help people whom they will never meet. They give because it’s Christmas.
And with every gift, they are celebrating the birth of the one who came to give us his very self.
Have a great week and remember: To see what is possible, you’ll have to attempt the impossible.
