It was a constant in my childhood. The ads on TV or the envelopes arriving like clockwork in the mail. Publisher’s Clearing House was always there, with its promise of grandiose prizes.
The image of Ed McMahon arriving at a winner’s home with a band, balloons and a gigantic cheque held the promise and allure of a life unencumbered by trivial things, like work.
But alas, all good things must come to an end, and the same with Publisher’s Clearing House. The company, which was built on selling magazine subscriptions, recently filed for bankruptcy.
Not only does it spell an end to a part of our past, it means some of those who won, “Forever Prizes” and have been collecting up to $5,000.00 a week are now struggling to pay their bills.
King David wrote in Psalm 20:7 “Some . . . boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God.”
We may not boast of our chariots and horses, or even of our forever prizes from the Publishers Clearing House, but is our trust placed in things that won’t last?
The scriptures are clear that when we boast as Christ Followers, we should boast in the name of our Lord.
Have a great week and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
