The other morning, I was starting my day at Tim Hortons, I know, surprising. And I noticed a lady at the counter wearing a T-Shirt that said across the back, “For the Good of our Community.”

I wondered what community group she represented, and when she turned around the front of her shirt said, NSLC. For those not from Nova Scotia, that’s the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission.

Now, there are many things that I associate with alcohol, and not one of them contributes to the good of our community. I thought, there’s a Penn waiting to be written.

I decided to dig a little deeper, and discovered that this was grant program, instituted by the liquor commission to “award grants to selected charities and non-profit organizations working to address areas of critical community need within Nova Scotia.”

And at first blush, this seemed noble, many of the organizations that receive the grants are working to help the victims of homelessness, food insecurity and domestic violence.

Maybe they need a new T-shirt that says, NSLC: Helping communities heal… from the things we helped cause.

Here’s a suggestion. Do you really want to deal with issues like homelessness, food insecurity and domestic violence?  Stop selling alcohol.

Have a great week and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
