It was repeated over and over again last week by government officials: “We believe in free speech, but. . .” And each time, I was reminded of Winston Churchill’s words:
“Everyone is in favour of free speech. Hardly a day passes without its being extolled, but some people’s idea of it is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone else says anything back, that is an outrage.”
It seems that some of those who most loudly preach tolerance are often the least tolerant of differing views.
If you’ve been following the news, you’ve probably read about Sean Feucht. Feucht—whom the media has labelled a “pro-Trump Christian singer”—had a series of worship events planned across Canada. But like a row of falling dominos, federal agencies and municipalities quickly began withdrawing or cancelling his permits.
The reason? His views on gender ideology, abortion, and the LGBTQ+ community. Views that don’t align with current cultural narratives. So, apparently, they shouldn’t be heard.
Now, I’m not a fan of Sean Feucht. He’s chosen to mix Christianity and politics, and that usually results in more politics and less Christianity. But I’m even less of a fan of the government muzzling voices simply because they express dissenting opinions.
Have a great week and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
