It’s a story of tragedy. The recent flash floods that have left over one hundred and thirty dead in Texas, have dominated the news over the past few weeks. Especially devastating is the number of children who lost their lives in the disaster.
As fundraising efforts have gotten underway, a disturbing trend is being seen. Several organizations report that they are receiving responses along the lines of, “No! They voted for this to happen,” and “they deserved it.”
Really?
Nina Turner, a former national co-chair for Bernie Sanders, stated, “It takes a serious lack of humanity to see children die in a natural disaster and respond with something along the lines of ‘that’s what they voted for.’”
And Nick Allardice, the CEO of GiveDirectly, wrote, “Our response as citizens cannot mirror the dysfunction at the top. It cannot become, ‘I only help those who voted like me.’”
In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus taught us to love our neighbour, even when our neighbour is someone that we don’t have a lot in common with. Perhaps even someone who votes differently than we do.
As Christians, let’s be sure to see people through the eyes of Christ, not through the eyes of political affiliation.
Have a great week and remember: To see what is really possible, you will have to attempt the impossible.
